Details
The 21-ton British mineral wagon was a standard open-topped freight wagon used primarily for coal and other bulk minerals from the 1930s to the 1980s. Mass-produced by British Railways after nationalisation in 1948, these rugged wagons featured steel bodies, end doors, and a short-wheelbase design. Most were unfitted, relying on locomotive braking, though some later received vacuum brakes. Commonly seen in long rakes serving collieries and power stations, they played a vital role in Britain’s industrial rail network. Eventually replaced by modern hopper wagons, many are now preserved on heritage railways across the UK.
