Details
The 16-ton mineral wagon was one of Britain’s most common freight wagons, introduced in the 1920s and widely used until the 1970s. Designed to carry coal and minerals, it featured a steel body, end doors, and a short wheelbase. Under British Railways, over 300,000 were built to a standard design after 1948. Most were unfitted, lacking continuous brakes, which made them suitable only for slower freight trains. These wagons were a key component of Britain’s post-war industrial transport. Phased out by more modern wagons, many 16-tonners survive today in heritage railway collections and museum displays.
