Details

British Type C fuel tank wagons were never a formal classification in their own right, instead falling within the familiar Class A (light oils) and Class B (heavy oils) categories. Their design evolved steadily from small, riveted tank wagons of the late nineteenth century into larger, safer vehicles as traffic volumes increased. By the 1960s, modern welded bogie tank wagons such as the TTA and TEA had become standard, offering higher capacity and improved safety. Widely used by major oil companies including Shell and BP, these wagons replaced ageing private-owner fleets and became a defining feature of Britain’s petroleum traffic.
