Details
The DRB Class 50 is one of the most significant and versatile German 2-10-0 “Decapod” steam locomotives, originally built as a standard freight engine (Einheitsdampflokomotive) for the Deutsche Reichsbahn beginning in 1939. Developed to meet the increasing demands for heavy goods haulage on the eve of World War II, the Class 50 featured a 1'E h2 wheel arrangement with one leading axle and five coupled driving axles, combining robust tractive effort with a relatively light axle load that allowed it to work not only mainlines but also branch lines with lighter track. In total, over 3,100 locomotives of this class were constructed by a wide range of European builders up to 1959, including simplified “war locos” (Übergangskriegslokomotiven) towards the end of the conflict.
Originally designed to haul heavy freight, the Class 50 became a true mixed-traffic workhorse of German steam, capable of speeds up to about 80 km/h (50 mph) while handling both goods and passenger duties on secondary routes, a versatility that endeared it to railways well beyond wartime Germany. After World War II many Class 50s served on the Deutsche Bundesbahn and later the East German Deutsche Reichsbahn, with the Bundesbahn reorganising surviving engines into sub-classes such as 050, 051, 052 and 053 from 1968 to fit new numbering systems. The final members of the class were withdrawn from regular service by 1987, but numerous locomotives survive in preservation and on heritage railways, making the DRB Class 50 an iconic and beloved prototype for HO scale and model railway layouts depicting German steam era operations from the 1930s through the late steam period.
