The Prussian P 10 was a powerful and elegant 2-8-2 “Mikado” steam locomotive built for the Prussian state railways in the early 20th century and later adopted into the Deutsche Reichsbahn roster as DRG Class 39, where it became one of Germany’s most remarkable passenger engines. Designed in 1919 by Borsig under chief engineer August Meister, production began in 1922 once post-World War I material shortages eased, and a total of 260 locomotives were constructed by several major German builders between 1922 and 1927. These three-cylinder locomotives were specifically engineered to haul heavy express and passenger trains through the hilly terrain of the Mittelgebirge highlands, combining strong performance with a top speed of about 110 km/h (68 mph).

Because of their high axle load, the P 10s were assigned to robust main routes such as the Main-Weser Railway between Frankfurt and Kassel, the Black Forest network, and the Gäubahn, where they tackled gradients and long trains with confidence. Although dieselisation and newer locomotive designs eventually led to their retirement by 1967, the Prussian P 10 left a lasting legacy as the most powerful of the Prussian state railway passenger locomotives. Today, only a few preserved examples such as 39 230 remain on display in museums, making the P 10 an inspiring prototype for HO and scale model railway layouts depicting Germany’s classic steam era.
