Details

The Prussian S 10 was a classic 4-6-0 express steam locomotive built for the Prussian state railways in the early 20th century to address the need for more powerful passenger traction on Germany’s growing rail network. Between 1910 and 1914, a total of 202 S 10 locomotives were constructed by manufacturers such as Schwartzkopff; the first two prototypes were originally classified as S 8 before being redesignated S 10 in 1912.

Designed as an evolutionary development of the successful Prussian P 8 but equipped with a four-cylinder simple expansion engine, the S 10 was intended for fast express services but ultimately proved less efficient than its later counterparts, especially the S 10.1 four-cylinder compound versions. The German Deutsche Reichsbahn later took many into its Class 17.0-1 roster with running numbers 17 001–135, but widespread retirement followed relatively quickly due to high coal and steam consumption; most were withdrawn by 1935, with only a handful surviving into the post-war era before final retirement in 1954.
