The ÖBB Class 2143 is a classic Austrian diesel-hydraulic locomotive that became a familiar sight on non-electrified main and branch lines of the Austrian Federal Railways (Österreichische Bundesbahnen) from the 1960s onward. Built by Simmering-Graz-Pauker between 1964 and 1977, a total of 77 locomotives were delivered to ÖBB, numbered from 2143.001 to 2143.077. The Class 2143 features a B-B wheel arrangement, an SGP T12c diesel engine with a Voith hydraulic transmission, and a top speed of up to 100–110 km/h, making it a versatile motive power choice for both passenger and freight services on Austria’s unelectrified routes.

Throughout its long service life, the Class 2143 hauled everything from local passenger trains to goods traffic, proving especially useful on branch lines in eastern Austria where electrification was never installed. Some examples later appeared in private service, including operation by regional carriers such as the Stauden-Verkehrsgesellschaft, and the type even worked international trains like the “Vindobona” in the 1980s. Although now largely retired from regular service, the ÖBB 2143 remains a beloved prototype among model railway enthusiasts, representing classic Austrian diesel traction on HO scale and modern era layouts depicting mixed-traffic operations in the late 20th century.
