Details

The DBAG Class 234 is a high-speed variant of the famous DR Class 130 family of diesel-electric locomotives originally built for the Deutsche Reichsbahn of East Germany and later inherited by Deutsche Bahn AG after German reunification. This family of Co'Co' locomotives was produced in the Soviet Union at Luhansk between the 1970s and early 1980s and became well known under the nickname “Ludmilla” among railway enthusiasts for its size, power, and distinctive Russian-built design.

After reunification, a number of the robust DR Class 132 (later DBAG Class 232) locomotives were rebuilt to achieve a higher maximum speed of 140 km/h, resulting in the Class 234 designation. These rebuilt locomotives were upgraded with higher-speed bogies and other modifications to make them suitable for fast freight and even some passenger services on non-electrified main lines in Germany. Today the DBAG Class 234 remains an interesting prototype for HO-scale diesel layouts, especially for enthusiasts modelling late-20th-century and early-21st-century German rail operations where powerful diesel traction was needed on key trunk routes without electrification.
