The SNCF Class CC 72000 is an iconic French diesel-electric locomotive built for the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF) between 1967 and 1974 by Alsthom in Belfort, with 92 units produced to haul trains across non-electrified main lines. Designed to replace steam and less powerful diesels with a high-performance diesel drive and distinctive C'C' wheel arrangement, the CC 72000 reached top speeds of 140 km/h on early examples and 160 km/h on later versions, making it one of France’s most powerful and versatile diesels of its era.

In service, CC 72000 locomotives worked long-distance passenger trains and heavy freight services on major unelectrified routes such as Paris–Clermont-Ferrand, Lyon–Bordeaux, Nantes–Lyon, and Paris–Basel, often replacing older traction and offering reliable performance across the national network. As electrification expanded and new diesel designs arrived, many CC 72000s were withdrawn from regular service from the 2000s onward, with a number remotorised and reclassified as SNCF Class CC 72100 between 1999 and 2005. Today the CC 72000 remains a beloved prototype for HO-scale and European diesel era model railway layouts, prized for its classic French design and historic role in diesel traction heritage.
