Details

The NS Class 200 is a classic Dutch diesel shunting locomotive that became a familiar sight in the yards and branch lines of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) from the 1930s through the early 2000s. Built by Werkspoor between 1934 and 1951, a total of 169 locomotives were produced to handle everyday shunting duties on the standard-gauge network in the Netherlands.

Rail enthusiasts affectionately nicknamed these compact diesel engines “Sikken” (singular “Sik”, meaning “goat”), due to their distinctive whistle and stubborn yet reliable working character, while NS staff commonly referred to them simply as the “locomotor.” With a two-axle configuration and simple yet rugged diesel-electric design, the Class 200 was ideal for assembling freight trains, moving wagons in yards, and even working on some remote branch services. Fifteen locomotives were equipped with a retractable crane for extra versatility.

Although the last Class 200s were retired from regular NS service in 2008 following changes in safety regulations, many survive today in preservation on heritage railways and at museums, offering a charming and useful prototype for model railway layouts. Enthusiasts and modellers have long celebrated the Class 200 with finely detailed HO-scale models offered by manufacturers such as Roco, making the Sik an iconic addition to layouts depicting Dutch shunting and local freight operations.
