Details

The DB Class Köf III is a classic German small diesel-hydraulic shunting locomotive that played an essential role in yard and light freight duties for the Deutsche Bundesbahn and later Deutsche Bahn AG. Officially introduced in 1959 to fill the gap between earlier tiny shunters and larger freight locomotives, the Class Köf III was designed as a Kleinlokomotive with a diesel engine and hydraulic transmission, giving it reliable performance for moving wagons, works trains, and short-haul assignments on standard gauge branch lines and station yards. The “Köf” designation stands for Kleinlokomotive (small locomotive), öl (diesel fuel), and Flüssigkeitsgetriebe (hydraulic transmission), reflecting its compact yet capable design.

After initial prototype batches, the successful Köf III became the basis for more than 300 production locomotives that were renumbered as Class 331, 332, 333 and 335 under the Deutsche Bundesbahn classification system in 1968, depending on speed and equipment variations. The most common variants, such as Class 332 and upgraded remote-controlled Class 335, continued in service well into the late 20th and early 21st centuries, with many preserved examples still active on heritage lines and in industrial use today.
