Details

In the early 1960s, the former Czechoslovak State Railways (CSD) required a new class of powerful electric freight locomotives for operation on the 3 kV DC electrified network in the north and east of the country. To meet this need, a locomotive from the E 499.1 passenger series—then still under development—was adapted as a freight prototype. The resulting design delivered a continuous power output of 2,032 kW and a maximum speed of 90 km/h, making it well suited to heavy freight duties. Following successful testing, Škoda produced a total of 85 locomotives, which entered service with CSD as the E 469.1 series, becoming a key component of Czechoslovakia’s electric freight fleet.
