Details

The Siemens ES64U4 forms the basis of the ÖBB Class 1216 “Taurus III”, a high-performance, multi-system electric locomotive used by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and other European operators. Part of the Siemens EuroSprinter family, these locomotives are designed for general-purpose operation across multiple voltage systems, combining versatility with cutting-edge three-phase traction technology.

With a top speed of 230 km/h and a power output of 6,400 kW, the Taurus III is capable of hauling both high-speed passenger services and heavy freight across electrified European main lines. Its sleek, aerodynamic design and advanced traction systems make it a standout in modern electric traction.

In September 2019, the Czech State Railways acquired locomotives 1216 902 and 903 from Rail Transport Service GmbH (RTS). After a full overhaul and repainting in the contemporary Najbrt livery, these locomotives are now regularly deployed on EuroCity services, linking major cities across Central Europe.
