Details

To modernize Czechoslovakia’s electrified network, Škoda developed the second generation of universal electric locomotives in the late 1970s. The S 499.2 series, later designated Class 263, originated from this program, with “S” indicating alternating current operation. Two prototype locomotives were delivered in 1984 and underwent extensive testing to ensure reliability and performance.

The locomotives deliver an hourly output of 3,060 kW and reach a top speed of 120 km/h, making them suitable for both passenger and freight operations. Following successful trials, ten production locomotives were delivered in 1988, forming the series that remains in service today.

These locomotives are now operated by ZSSK, based in Bratislava, and are most commonly seen working on the Bratislava–Breclav line. Their combination of modern electrical equipment, robust mechanical design, and mixed-traffic capability makes the Class 263 an interesting and versatile prototype for Central European model railway layouts set from the late 1980s to the present day.
