Details

The DB Class E 40 was a class of German electric locomotives introduced by the Deutsche Bundesbahn from 1957, designed primarily for freight services on electrified main lines. It formed part of the German Einheits-Elektrolokomotiven standard locomotive programme developed in the 1950s to modernise post-war traction with shared components across multiple classes. The Class E 40 is mechanically similar to the express-train Class E 10 but was geared for lower top speed and higher tractive effort ideal for hauling heavy freight.

A total of 879 locomotives were built by major German locomotive manufacturers including Krupp, Henschel, Krauss-Maffei, Siemens, AEG, and BBC between 1957 and 1973. Originally rated for a top speed of 100 km/h, many were later re-geared to 110 km/h, which allowed them to work freight and slower passenger services. In the 1968 renumbering, the class became Class 140, while the electric-brake equipped sub-series was redesignated Class 139.

The E 40/140 proved rugged and reliable, serving German rail freight for decades. Many continued in work into the 2000s with DB and later private operators, though most have now been retired from regular service.
