Details

The NS Class 186 is a family of modern Bo’Bo’ electric locomotives built by Bombardier Transportation between 2006 and 2014 as part of the TRAXX F140 MS2 series. Designed as multi-system locomotives, they can operate under a range of European electrification systems, including 1.5 kV DC, 3 kV DC, and 15/25 kV AC, making them highly versatile for international use.

These locomotives were introduced to haul high-speed passenger services for Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), originally on NS Hispeed Intercity Direct services along the HSL-Zuid high-speed route connecting Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Breda, and later on other intercity routes.

Production of the Class 186 occurred in several batches: the first batch of leased locomotives arrived in 2008–2009, followed by further units delivered to NS from 2014 to 2016. Some locomotives have been repainted into NS’s yellow-blue livery, and others have been involved in sale-and-leaseback arrangements with leasing companies such as Akiem.
