Details

The DRG Class E94 was a powerful heavy-freight electric locomotive developed in Germany during the Second World War, entering production in 1940 for the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Designed as an evolution of the earlier E93, it featured a Co'Co' wheel arrangement and high tractive effort, making it ideal for hauling heavy trains over demanding main lines and gradients. Around 200 locomotives were built between 1940 and 1956, with most early deliveries produced to meet wartime transport demands.

After the war, the class continued to play a major role in European rail operations. Additional locomotives were completed for the Deutsche Bundesbahn in West Germany, while others were allocated to the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), where they became Class 1020, and to East Germany’s Deutsche Reichsbahn, where refurbished examples worked heavy freight and occasional passenger services. Later upgrades increased power output and allowed higher operating speeds, extending the working life of the type well into the late twentieth century.

Nicknamed the “Green Crocodile” because of its articulated appearance and resemblance to famous Swiss electric locomotives, the E94 became an icon of European electric traction. Its distinctive design, heavy-haul capability, and long service life make it a popular prototype for model railway enthusiasts, particularly those modelling German, Austrian, or Alpine freight operations from the 1940s through the 1980s.
