Details

The PKP Class EP05 is one of the most recognizable Polish electric locomotives and a popular subject for railway history fans and model railway enthusiasts. Its origins lie in the EU05 class, a four-axle electric locomotive built by Škoda Works between 1957 and 1960 for Polskie Koleje Panstwowe (PKP). Based on a proven Czechoslovak design, the EU05 helped modernize Poland’s expanding electrified railway network and was primarily used for passenger services.

In response to growing demand for faster express trains, most EU05 locomotives were rebuilt between 1973 and 1977, emerging as the EP05 class. Modifications, including changes to the gear ratio, increased the top speed to 160 km/h (99 mph). At the same time, the locomotives received a striking orange livery, setting them apart from standard passenger engines and making them instantly recognizable.

During the 1970s and 1980s, the EP05 became synonymous with high-speed passenger services, particularly on routes such as the Centralna Magistrala Kolejowa. Although eventually superseded by newer locomotives, several EP05 units remained in service longer than planned. A small number survive in preservation today, ensuring the EP05’s lasting appeal for model railway layouts and scale locomotive collections.
