The SNCF Class BB 15000 is a classic French 25 kV AC electric locomotive built by Alstom and MTE between 1971 and 1978, widely regarded as one of the most important mainline locomotives of the French national railway, Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF). Initially delivered as a class of 65 locomotives, the BB 15000 family was designed to handle high-speed passenger services on France’s rapidly electrifying northern and northeastern networks.

Featuring a distinctive “Nez Cassé” (broken nose) cab profile, the BB 15000 was capable of 160 km/h (99 mph) service and was paired with premier express trains including national Trans Europ Express (TEE) services. Their introduction in 1972 helped modernize French AC electrified operations, replacing older locomotives that could not meet new timetable speeds.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the class was a backbone of SNCF passenger operations, though the arrival of high-speed TGV services from the 1990s onward gradually shifted them from flagship duties. After the opening of the LGV Est high-speed line in 2007, many BB 15000s were reassigned to regional and Intercités routes or EuroCity work, and various sub-series were adapted for push-pull and regional services.

Today, the BB 15000 remains in service in multiple sectors and is celebrated for its role in French rail history and its appeal to model railway collectors and enthusiasts.
