Details

The DRG Class E 44.5 was a small but distinctive class of German electric locomotives built between 1931 and 1935 for the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Only nine locomotives were produced, making the subclass comparatively rare. Although related to the standard E 44 design, the E 44.5 locomotives were technically different and purpose-built for demanding work on the Freilassing–Berchtesgaden line, a route noted for its steep gradients and sharp curves.

Originally numbered E 44 101–109 and later renumbered E 44 501–509, these locomotives were designed to handle heavier trains on mountainous electrified routes while maintaining reliable operation. Their compact wheelbase and specialised gearing made them well suited to Alpine conditions, and most spent the majority of their careers working this line. The class remained in service for many decades, with the last examples withdrawn by Deutsche Bundesbahn in 1983, and a small number preserved.
