Details

The ÖBB Class 1144 is a class of Austrian electric locomotives developed through the rebuilding and modernisation of the earlier ÖBB Class 1044, one of Austria’s most successful main-line locomotive designs. Beginning in the mid-1990s, a programme was undertaken to upgrade selected 1044 locomotives with push-pull train control equipment, improved electronics, and other technical enhancements. Following conversion, the locomotives were renumbered as Class 1144.

The modernised locomotives were primarily used on passenger services, particularly in push-pull operation with driving trailers, allowing efficient regional and inter-regional workings without the need to run locomotives around their trains at termini. Their high power and reliable performance meant they continued to be used on a wide range of duties, including regional, commuter, and occasional freight services.
