Details

The CSD Class E 499.1 was a class of electric locomotives introduced in the 1950s for the Czechoslovak State Railways (CSD) as part of the post-war expansion of electrified main lines. Built by Škoda, the class was designed for mixed-traffic operation, hauling both passenger and freight trains on the country’s 3 kV DC electrified network.

These locomotives formed an important step in the modernisation of rail transport in Czechoslovakia, combining reliable electrical equipment with a robust mechanical design suited to long-distance main-line work. The class became a familiar sight on major routes for many years, and a number later passed to the successor railways following the division of Czechoslovakia, continuing in service into the late twentieth century.
