Details

The SBB Re 620, originally designated Re 6/6 and later renumbered under the UIC system as Re 620, is a class of powerful six-axle electric locomotives built for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS) between 1972 and 1980. Designed as the modern replacement for the venerable Ae 6/6 Gotthard locomotives, the Re 620 quickly became one of Switzerland’s most capable heavy-haul electric locomotives, handling both freight and passenger duties across the Alps.

With a Bo’Bo’Bo’ wheel arrangement, the Re 620’s three two-axle bogies and articulated design provided the high tractive effort needed for steep gradients such as the Gotthard Railway while maintaining good curve performance. These locomotives delivered around 8,000 kW of power and could reach speeds up to 140 km/h, making them versatile performers on Switzerland’s electrified network.

Eighty-nine units were built, numbered 11601–11689, and many were named after Swiss communes, a tradition in Switzerland. The Re 620 remained a cornerstone of SBB freight operations for decades, often paired with Re 4/4 locomotives for heavy trains, and continued in service through the early 21st century with SBB Cargo. Their long career, distinctive red livery, and alpine heritage make the Re 620 a compelling subject for model railway layouts and Swiss railway collections.
