Details

The SBB Re 4/4III was a small class of Swiss electric locomotives built in the 1970s to handle routes requiring high tractive effort, particularly on steeply graded main lines such as the Bözberg route. Only twenty locomotives were produced. Although externally similar to the widely used Re 4/4II, the Re 4/4III featured different gearing and traction characteristics, allowing them to haul heavier trains on demanding sections of railway.

During the 1990s and 2000s, several members of the class were sold or transferred to private operators. Under new ownership they were renumbered as Re 430 and Re 436, continuing in service on freight, infrastructure, and regional duties. These locomotives often appeared in a range of liveries, reflecting their use by different companies and extending their operational lives well beyond their original Swiss Federal Railways careers.
