Details

The NS Class 1600 is a powerful and distinctive Dutch electric locomotive, widely recognised by European railway enthusiasts and a popular prototype for modern-era model railway layouts. Built by Alstom between 1981 and 1983, a total of 58 locomotives were delivered to Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) following extensive testing of contemporary electric designs during the 1970s. The class was derived from the French SNCF BB 7200 design and quickly became one of the most capable locomotives in the Dutch fleet thanks to its advanced electronic power control and high output.

Designed as versatile Bo-Bo locomotives, the Class 1600 machines were used on both passenger and freight services, replacing several older locomotive types and modernising main-line operations across the Netherlands. In later years, many units were transferred between freight and passenger divisions, with some being renumbered as the Class 1800 for passenger duties, while others continued to operate with freight operators.

With their long service life, distinctive liveries, and widespread use on intercity, regional, and freight trains, the NS Class 1600 and 1800 remain highly appealing subjects for model railway enthusiasts modelling Dutch or continental European railways from the 1980s through to the modern era.
