Details

The SBB RABDe 500, better known as the ICN (InterCityNeigezug), represents Switzerland’s move into high-speed, tilting electric multiple units designed for fast intercity travel on curving routes. Developed by a consortium led by Bombardier and Alstom, the trains were introduced from 1999 onward for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB).

Each ICN set is a seven-car electric multiple unit equipped with an active tilting system, allowing higher speeds through curves without the need for extensive track rebuilding. This made the trains ideal for routes such as Geneva–St. Gallen and other major Swiss corridors where line geometry limits conventional high-speed running.

The trains have a maximum speed of 200 km/h and provide modern passenger amenities, reflecting the late-20th-century shift toward comfortable, high-frequency intercity services in Europe.
