Historical Background

The Ford Fiesta Mk1 is one of the most important small cars in Ford’s history and a true icon of 1970s motoring. Launched in 1976, the Fiesta was Ford’s first front-wheel-drive supermini and was developed to compete with compact European rivals such as the Fiat 127 and Renault 5. Built in Valencia, Spain, as well as other European factories, the Fiesta Mk1 quickly became popular across the UK thanks to its compact dimensions, excellent fuel economy and fun driving character.

Available primarily as a three-door hatchback, the Fiesta Mk1 combined practical everyday usability with modern styling and responsive handling. Early models featured economical four-cylinder Kent and Valencia engines, while higher-specification versions such as the Fiesta Ghia added more comfort and trim features. In 1980, Ford introduced the sporty Fiesta Supersport and the legendary Fiesta XR2, a hot hatch model that became hugely popular among driving enthusiasts and remains one of the most collectable classic Fords today.

Production of the Ford Fiesta Mk1 continued until 1983, when it was replaced by the Ford Fiesta Mk2.
