Introduced in 1988, the Vauxhall Astra Mk2 GTE 16V represented the peak of performance for the second-generation Astra and one of the fastest hot hatchbacks of its era. Building on the success of the earlier 8-valve GTE, the 16V model was powered by the advanced 1998cc C20XE “red top” twin-cam engine, producing around 150 bhp. This gave the lightweight Astra impressive acceleration and a top speed in excess of 130 mph, placing it firmly among the elite performance cars of the late 1980s.

The GTE 16V was instantly recognisable by its aggressive body kit, digital dashboard, Recaro-style sports seats and distinctive alloy wheels. Strongly associated with touring car racing success, particularly in the British Touring Car Championship, the Astra GTE 16V became an icon of Vauxhall’s motorsport image.
