The Ford Capri Mk I, launched in 1969, was marketed as “the car you always promised yourself” — a European answer to the American pony car. By the early 1970s, Ford expanded the range with higher-spec trim levels and more powerful engines. At the top of the luxury-performance bracket sat the 3.0 GXL, produced mainly for the 1972–1974 model years. It was purchased by TV presenter and proprietor of The Smallest Cog, Richard Hammond, who modified it before taking it on a grand African adventure.
