Details:
Introduced in 1969, the Range Rover Velar was the precursor to the full production Range Rover Classic, representing Land Rover’s first attempt at combining off-road capability with refined on-road comfort. Developed under the codename “Velar” (from the Latin velare, meaning “to cover”), it featured aluminium panels and innovative design cues that would influence the Classic model launched in 1970. Early Velar prototypes used 3.5-litre V8 engines and advanced suspension to provide a balance of performance, luxury, and ruggedness.
The Velar name later became synonymous with cutting-edge design in the modern Range Rover line, but the original prototype helped set the blueprint for the Classic’s long-wheelbase, all-terrain capability, and premium appeal. Today, the Velar remains a significant chapter in Land Rover history and is highly regarded by collectors and scale model enthusiasts.
