Recreate a unique and historically significant part of British railway freight with this detailed BR Fish Van model. Designed to reflect the vital role railways once played in transporting perishable goods, these insulated vans were essential in delivering fresh fish quickly from coastal ports to inland markets.

Before the rise of fast refrigerated road transport, rail offered the most efficient way to move fish over long distances. This capability helped establish Grimsby as the world’s largest fishing port, with trains of fish vans running at speed across the network to maintain freshness.

Following nationalisation, British Rail adopted a proven LNER design, featuring insulated bodies where fish was pre-packed in ice before transit. Between 1954 and 1961, several hundred of these wagons were constructed at Faverdale Wagon Works near Darlington. In service, they were typically finished in a distinctive all-white livery with a blue spot, often running in rakes of 10 to 20 vans hauled by express locomotives.
