Details
The 7-plank open wagon was a ubiquitous type of British wooden-bodied goods vehicle used extensively from the late 19th century, through the grouping era and into British Railways ownership. Built to Railway Clearing House standards (notably the RCH 1907 specification), thousands of private owner and industrial 7-plank wagons carried coal, coke, general merchandise and mineral traffic. Their simple design featured drop-sides formed of seven planks, a timber body, and a short wheelbase underframe. Many survived well into the 1960s, even as newer steel wagons began replacing wooden vans. Model makers often replicate these wagons in pre-grouping, grouping and early BR liveries, celebrating both their historical abundance and industrial charm.
