The British Railways 6-wheel milk tanker wagons were introduced in the 1930s to improve bulk milk transportation across the UK. Early 4-wheeled designs proved unstable at speed, prompting the development of the 6-wheel variant for United Dairies and Express Dairy. These wagons offered better ride quality, higher capacity, and improved safety for long-distance milk delivery.

Built to robust standards, the 6-wheel milk tankers featured a cylindrical tank body mounted on a sturdy underframe, designed to minimise spillage and maintain hygiene. Over 630 units were constructed between 1932 and 1948, serving both local and national routes. They became a familiar sight on branch lines and mainlines, often grouped in block trains, efficiently linking rural creameries to urban dairies.
