Details

The 24-ton hopper wagon was a four-wheeled steel mineral wagon used by British Railways following the Second World War. A batch of 1,500 wagons was built to Diagram 1/162, uprated from an earlier 22-ton version (Diagram 1/161).

These wagons were primarily built by the contractor Charles Roberts & Co. for use in transporting iron-ore, and later other aggregates such as limestone, chalk and sand.

The design featured bottom discharge doors and robust construction suited to heavy mineral traffic. While detailed specification data (such as exact dimensions or tare weight) are not fully available in the cited sources, this wagon type became a standard post-war bulk mineral hopper for British Railways.
