Details
The IOA wagon is a Romanian-built high-sided open freight wagon designed specifically for transporting ballast, spoil and other heavy bulk materials for railway engineering work. Introduced in 2009, these wagons were built for infrastructure duties and are widely used on maintenance and renewal trains across the UK rail network.
All IOA wagons were delivered in the distinctive Network Rail engineers’ yellow livery and carry the nickname “Mussel.” Designed for heavy-duty work, each wagon has a maximum load capacity of 102 tonnes, allowing it to move large quantities of ballast or excavated material efficiently during track construction and maintenance projects.
In service, IOA wagons are typically operated in block trains of ten wagons or more, forming long engineering consists that can rapidly deliver or remove material from work sites. Their robust construction and large capacity make them an important part of modern railway infrastructure operations.
