Details
Bulk milk transportation by rail began in 1931 with the introduction of 4-wheeled milk tankers, built by the Southern Railway for United Dairies. However, these early wagons suffered from poor riding characteristics and were subject to speed restrictions, limiting their efficiency in service.
To address these issues, improved 6-wheeled milk tankers were developed for both United Dairies and Express Dairies. These redesigned wagons offered better stability and performance, proving highly successful. Between 1932 and 1948, more than 630 examples were constructed and operated across the UK rail network, becoming a familiar sight on milk traffic duties.
With the gradual shift of bulk milk transport to road haulage, these wagons declined in use and were largely withdrawn by the 1980s. Today, several preserved examples remain, offering a fascinating glimpse into this distinctive aspect of Britain’s railway history—an ideal addition for modellers recreating authentic freight operations.
