Details

The “7-plank” open wagon was a standard four-wheeled freight vehicle featuring seven drop-side planks on each side of the body and was widely used for coal, coke and general merchandise traffic. These wagons were built to meet the Railway Clearing House (RCH) standards adopted for open stock and became extremely numerous in the UK network.

After nationalisation, many entered service with British Railways and remained in use well into the 1960s. The design permitted simple and efficient loading and tipping of bulk loads, and many surviving examples have been preserved on heritage railways. The 7-plank wagons remain a familiar feature of British freight heritage and modelling interests.
