Details

These carriages were constructed between 1870 and 1890, with more than 1,500 built for both local and main line train sets. The sets typically consisted of between eight and eleven coaches, each 26 ft long on a 15 ft wheelbase. They were originally close-coupled using a bar, although some modified main line coaches were later fitted with short buffers and incorporated into the suburban sets. Only the brake coaches retained long buffers.

Initially, braking was provided solely by the guard’s hand brake, but later all coaches were fitted with Westinghouse air brakes. Lighting was originally provided by oil lamps, although many coaches were later converted to gas lighting. From 1881, some sets were also fitted with electric lighting, powered by a dynamo in the brake coach.
