Historical Background

The Snailbeach District Railways operated a 2ft 4in narrow gauge network in Shropshire, serving the lead mines and limestone quarries around Snailbeach and the Stiperstones. The railway played a vital role in transporting minerals to the Great Western Railway interchange at Pontesbury, where loads were transferred to the standard gauge network.

Purpose-built hopper wagons were developed to speed up the movement of ore by allowing their loads to be discharged quickly and efficiently. The larger capacity wagons became a familiar sight on the railway, handling heavy mineral traffic throughout much of the line's working life. Their distinctive design has made them a favourite subject for OO9 modellers recreating Britain's industrial narrow gauge railways.
