Historical Background

The Snailbeach District Railways operated a 2ft 4in narrow gauge network in the hills of Shropshire, serving the area's lead mines, limestone quarries and local industries. While mineral traffic formed the railway's primary business, coal was equally important, providing fuel for mines, processing works and local communities connected by the line.

Coal wagons such as these were built to provide a practical and efficient means of transporting fuel across the railway's network.
