Historical Background

When the Vale of Rheidol Railway opened in 1902, three identical four-wheel guard's vans were constructed by the Midland Railway Carriage & Wagon Company in Shrewsbury. As the original passenger coaches did not include luggage or guard's accommodation, these vans became an essential part of every train operating on the line.

Throughout their working lives, the vans carried the guard while providing secure space for luggage and parcels. Their compact design and distinctive appearance made them a familiar sight behind the Vale of Rheidol's famous steam locomotives as they traversed the scenic route between Aberystwyth and Devil's Bridge, and they remain an iconic part of the railway's heritage.
