Historical Background

The Ffestiniog Railway was built to transport finished slate from the quarries around Blaenau Ffestiniog to the harbour at Porthmadog, where it could be shipped around the world. To handle this specialised traffic, the railway developed purpose-built slate wagons designed to safely carry large quantities of dressed slate down the steep mountain route.

The 3 Ton Slate Wagon became one of the railway's most important freight vehicles, with 250 examples constructed over a fourteen-year period. Several variations were produced, including different frame arrangements and both braked and unbraked versions. Many examples have survived into preservation, with surviving wagons found on the Ffestiniog Railway, the Talyllyn Railway and in private collections, ensuring this distinctive wagon remains one of the most recognisable symbols of Welsh narrow gauge railways.
