Details

The RENFE Série 277 was a class of electric locomotives built for Spain’s national railway, RENFE, between 1952 and 1959. A total of 75 locomotives were delivered, originally numbered in the 7700 series, and they became known locally as the “Inglesas” (the English ones) due to their British construction by English Electric, Vulcan Foundry, and Westinghouse.

Designed with a Co'Co' wheel arrangement and built for 3 kV DC electrification on the Iberian gauge (1,668 mm), the Class 277 locomotives produced about 2,200 kW of power and could reach 110 km/h. They were primarily used on freight services, although they also worked passenger trains when needed. Their comfortable cabs were seen as a significant improvement for crews at a time when steam traction still dominated many electrified routes.

The Class 277s were particularly valuable on mountainous electrified lines such as the Venta de Baños–Gijón route, where their strong traction helped them handle steep gradients and heavy loads.

Withdrawals began in the late 1970s as more modern electric locomotives arrived. A handful of units have been preserved in Spain, including 277-002, 277-022, 277-047, and 277-066, with some example locomotives in running order at rail preservation groups and museums.
