Details

The Prussian T 13 was a series of robust German steam tank locomotives built in large numbers for the various state railways, especially the Prussian state railways and later the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the early 20th century. They featured a compact 0-8-0T wheel arrangement and were mainly used for goods and shunting duties around yards and branch lines.

Between 1910 and 1916, more than 500 standard T 13s were built. After heavy losses in the First World War, additional engines were delivered in the early 1920s for the Reichsbahn and Saar Railways. Similar locomotives operated with the Imperial Railways in Alsace-Lorraine and the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg State Railways.

In 1925, the Reichsbahn grouped these engines into its Class 92.5–10 series with running numbers from 92 501 to 92 1072, and they continued work throughout Germany’s rail network. After further additions during the 1930s and Second World War, the last of the T 13s were retired by the Deutsche Bundesbahn in 1965 and the East German Reichsbahn in 1968.

There were also T 13.1 superheated variants (later DRG Class 92.4) built in the early 1920s, and several experimental forms such as the Hagans and Mallet variants, but the classic T 13 remains the most recognised.
