Details

The DB Class 111 is a versatile and widely used electric locomotive built for Deutsche Bundesbahn to handle passenger and mixed-traffic services on Germany’s electrified main lines. Introduced in the 1970s as a development of the earlier Class 110, the Class 111 combined proven mechanical design with modern electrical equipment to meet the demands of fast regional and intercity trains.

Constructed between 1974 and 1984, a total of 227 locomotives were produced by major manufacturers including AEG, BBC, Henschel, Krupp and Siemens. The Class 111 employs a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement and operates from 15 kV AC overhead lines, delivering strong continuous power and reliable performance for both express and regional passenger duties. With a top speed of 160 km/h, it was capable of keeping pace with modern timetables and offered improved acceleration compared with predecessors.

Throughout its service life, the Class 111 became a common sight on electrified routes across Germany, from high-frequency regional services to longer intercity workings. Many locomotives were later adapted to specialised duties such as push-pull operation with driving trailers, making them even more flexible for commuter and S-Bahn style services.

Following German reunification and the creation of Deutsche Bahn AG, the Class 111 continued in service for decades, earning a reputation for reliability and adaptability. A number of units remain in use with private operators and leasing companies, extending the type’s presence well into the 21st century.
