Details

The SNCF Class BB 26000 is a class of dual-voltage electric locomotives built for the French National Railways (SNCF) between 1988 and 1998. A total of 234 locomotives were produced by GEC-Alsthom and MTE to handle both high-speed passenger and heavy freight duties on France’s electrified network. They are commonly known by the nickname “Sybic,” derived from SYNchrone BICourant (referring to the synchronous traction motors and dual 1.5 kV DC/25 kV AC capability).

With a B'B' wheel arrangement, a top speed of 200 km/h, and a power output of around 5.6 MW, the BB 26000s were designed as true mixed-traffic locomotives capable of hauling long express Corail trains at high speed and heavy freight trains across gradients. Their versatile performance made them a backbone of SNCF operations through the 1990s and into the 21st century.

Delivered initially in an orange and grey livery, the class later appeared in a variety of schemes including Fret SNCF green, multiservice red and grey, TER regional colours, and the distinctive En Voyage purple and silver.

The BB 26000’s combination of performance, distinctive styling, and long service life makes it a popular prototype for model railway enthusiasts, especially for late 20th-century and modern French layouts. The class has been produced in HO and N scales by major manufacturers, offering a wide range of modelling options.
