In the 1980s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) acquired electric dual-mode locomotives to improve cross-border operations and manage increasing traffic between the GDR and Czechoslovakia. Built with the expertise of Škoda based on the CSD series ES 499.1, these locomotives combined AC and DC capabilities, with AC components sourced from the GDR due to limited experience in 15 kV/16? Hz technology. The programme produced 15 locomotives of Class 372 and 20 of Class 230, later designated Class 180 by DB AG. Boasting an hourly output of 3,260 kW and a maximum speed of 120 km/h, these locomotives were a powerful and versatile addition to cross-border rail services.
