R5 Turbo Eurocup 1982
The 1982 Renault Eurocup marked the introduction of one of the most radical hot hatches ever built, the Renault 5 Turbo, developed by Renault. The series was created as a one-make championship to showcase the new model in closely controlled international competition across European circuits, emphasising driver skill and equal machinery.
The Renault 5 Turbo was engineered as a competition-focused machine rather than a conventional hatchback. Unlike the standard front-engined Renault 5, it featured a mid-mounted 1.4-litre turbocharged engine placed behind the driver, driving the rear wheels. This unusual layout, combined with wide wheel arches and a lightweight chassis, delivered exceptional traction, rapid acceleration, and outstanding agility on tight circuit layouts used in the Eurocup.
During the 1982 season, the Renault 5 Turbo produced extremely close racing, with all competitors using near-identical cars. The turbocharged power delivery required precise throttle control, particularly on corner exit, while the mid-engine balance rewarded committed driving and clean racing lines. The Eurocup quickly demonstrated the car’s potential as a serious competition platform in both circuit racing and rally applications.
For slot car enthusiasts and collectors, the 1982 Renault Eurocup Renault 5 Turbo represents a landmark moment in motorsport history. Its aggressive wide-body design, authentic early racing liveries, and innovative mid-engine turbo configuration make it an ideal subject for detailed slot car models, perfectly suited for recreating classic 1980s European sprint racing on technical home circuits.
