30th Anniversary P917K Presentacion 1970
The Porsche 917K was unveiled during the crucial development and presentation period that marked the transformation of the original 917 into a far more stable and competitive endurance racing machine ahead of the 1970 World Sportscar Championship season. Built by Porsche, the 917 programme had already shown extreme speed but early long-tail versions suffered from instability at high velocity, prompting a rapid engineering evolution.
The introduction of the 917K (Kurzheck / “short tail”) represented a major breakthrough. Developed in collaboration with key racing partners such as JW Automotive Engineering and Gulf-backed teams, the revised aerodynamic package significantly improved high-speed stability, downforce balance, and braking confidence. The shorter rear bodywork allowed the car to remain far more controllable on fast circuits while retaining the immense power of its 4.5- and later 4.9-litre flat-12 engine.
This presentation phase of the 917K marked the moment the model transitioned from a high-speed but unpredictable prototype into one of the most dominant endurance racing cars in history. The improved handling characteristics quickly translated into success during the 1970 season, including landmark victories at major endurance events such as Daytona and Le Mans.
For slot car enthusiasts and collectors, the Porsche 917K is a true icon of classic endurance racing. Its dramatic low-slung silhouette, unmistakable Gulf-era styling, and legendary high-speed performance make it one of the most desirable subjects for detailed slot car models, perfectly suited for recreating historic Group 5-style prototype racing on long straights and flowing endurance circuits.
