Details

The SECR C Class was a fleet of 0-6-0 steam locomotives designed by Harry Wainwright for the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR). Introduced between 1900 and 1908, a total of 109 locomotives were constructed by SECR’s Ashford and Longhedge Works, as well as external builders like Sharp, Stewart & Co. and Neilson, Reid & Co. The C Class was specifically designed for freight duties, but also proved capable on secondary passenger services and shunting work, making it a versatile addition to the SECR fleet.

The design featured inside cylinders and motion. These locomotives served extensively across Kent and Sussex. After the 1923 Grouping, the class was absorbed into the Southern Railway, and later passed to British Railways after nationalisation in 1948.

Withdrawals began in the 1950s, with the final members of the class retired by 1966 as diesel traction replaced steam. Remarkably, one example—No. 592—survives today and is preserved at the Bluebell Railway and has also featured in many films and TV series.
